Hand Tied and Trimmed Pom Poms…

February 8, 2015

Hand tied pom poms are just darling things… there is so much variety in yarns so you can create some really sweet poms.  The following tutorial uses a worsted weight yarn, my hand, and scissors – really these are a breeze to make!

It may take a couple pom poms of trial and error to find the right number of wrap arounds, and the number of fingers to use to get the size of pom you want… but essentially the bigger you want it to be you have to use more fingers and a fatter yarn!…

Start by holding the end of the yarn between your thumb and the finger that you choose to use for the width of the yarn wraps…

Then you start wrapping the yarn around… these pom poms took about 60 wraps around… keep the yarn fairly tight but not so tight that you’ll have trouble sliding the yarn off of your fingers…

After you hit your count in wraps cut the piece of yarn and then cut a short length of yarn about 5 inches… take this piece of yarn that you have cut and tie it around the wrapped yarn… make your half knot while the yarn wraps are still on your fingers to help the wraps keep their shape… then slide the yarn off of your fingers and tighten the half knot and add another knot… make it tight!…

You will now have loops that need to be cut… slide your scissors into the loops and cut them all…

Now if you want a muppet looking messy pom pom, which works well with thick yarns you can stop right here…

BUT if you want a neat and tidy round pom pom get your scissors ready… pickup the pom and press it flat between your thumb and fingers…

Start trimming all of the stray lengths with your scissors…

you will have to shake out the pom pom and reflatten it and make a few rounds of trimming to get it nice and even…

…flatten and trim… shake out… flatten and trim…

Pom poms make great garlands when threaded over bakers twine… they make for super fun rugs… wreaths… and kitties love them…  so that you have an easy how to reminder of the steps I complied the pictures into one step by step photo instructional!… happy pom pom making!… Be sure to like the Feathering My Nest Facebook page and to follow us on Instagram!… then share photos what you’ve done with the pom poms that you’ve made!…
