I Liiiiike Goooooold…. bar carts!…

May 7, 2015

I found this tea cart on kijiji in the fall and tucked it away into the basement… I ran out of time before the Christmas market to get her completed for that event… Well this past weekend while working on a custom table for a local interior design firm I had some drying time down time that I put to use on this ornate girl…

First I had to tear her down… completely pull it all apart… there is no good way to clean something like this, let alone paint it if it is left assembled.

I took the metal parts outside and gave everything a good wash to get rid of any grease and dust so that it was prepared for paint… then I let it dry out completely…

For paint I used a self etching primer and and automotive gold finish in a brand that I found at Canadian Tire called Dupli-Color…

I had nice weather this past weekend so I strung up a line from fence to fence and hung the parts to be painted… you can see I hung the parts using wire so that I could paint around it with ease…

Once the primer dried it was onto the gold… oh I love gold!… and this ornate frame was just screaming to be painted gold!…

After the gold was dry I then applied a triple thick crystal clear coat product to help protect the newly painted finish…

Details… details… onto the casters… the original casters were plastic and not very nice AT ALL… so the Pickle found me a great set of casters that I prepped and painted gold too!… on a gold roll!…

Here they are before paint…

And after… I taped the actual wheel part to protect it from the paint during the spraying…

The threaded rod end of the caster were a few threads too long so out came the metal blade hand saw to chop those down… have patience if you’e hand sawing through metal… it takes a little bit of time…

I took then original wooden tray bottoms to a local glass cutting shop and ordered some 5mm mirror for the top and 5mm clear glass for the lower tray… I had intended to make a chalkboard bottom tray, draw on it and then cover it with the glass but I loved the solo glass in there so much when I put it in that I’ve decided to leave her like this!… *swoon*

And of course I had to try her out all loaded up with supplies!…

She’s ready to entertain!…

What to you think!?… are you a fan of gold or is gold just too much for you!?
