If you follow Feathering My Nest on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook you’ll know this news… but it’s so exciting that I just have to share here as well! It involves this hand cast and gold leaf cranium…
Yesterday my gold leaf skull was included in a Fall Home Decor feature on The Marilyn Denis Show! I just about burst apart with excitement when I hear the amazing Amanda Forrest say “Feathering My Nest in Calgary” I couldn’t believe the shout out!
These skulls are hand cast, in a handmade silicone mold, using a two part casting material. I cast the skulls one at a time. Each skull is then cleaned up and bondoed as necessary to fill any large air bubbles that may have gotten trapped during the casting process.
Once the skulls are cleaned up they’re degreased and prepped for paint. The paint that I use on these babies is a nice matte white, followed by a matte clear coat that helps ensure the durability of the finish. Once the clear coat has cured I begin the gold leafing. As these skulls are made by hand there will be slight variations from skull to skull.
Here are a few screen shots of my gold leaf skull on the Marilyn Denis Show yesterday!
I still can’t believe it! 🙂
