Vintage Jar Snow Globe…

November 19, 2015

I grew up in an artificial tree household… and am now an artificial tree household myself… but there is something charming/sweet/romantic/family adventure funtime to going out and cutting down the family Christmas tree and hauling it home… I’ve captured that holiday tradition in this sweet vintage mason jar snow globe, and am sharing with you so that you can do the same!

To make the cutest little snow globes around gather up the following supplies:

Mini trees – you can get these at stores that sell christmas village houses, scale model pieces and even the dollar store!

Mason Jar – I used a vintage glass top Improved GEM Jar… you can use a new jar or a food jar that you’ve saved!

Fake Snow – again found in stores that sell christmas villages… and also craft supply stores.

Toy Car – growing up we called these “dinkies”… but people look at me funny when I talk about dinkies… I found the vintage styled toy car at a toy store, and you can find lots of vintage styled ones or even real vintage ones online!

Bakers Twine – I’ve had this large roll of bakers twine for years!… it came from Crate & Barrel… or you can pickup cute twines from places like Dixie & Twine

Once all the materials have been gathered it’s time to get to work!… begin by plucking the tree base off of the tree.. unless you’re making a Griswold version where the rootball is still attached to the tree 😉

Paaaaaahhh-luck!… and its gone

Vintage Jar Snow Globe04

Place the tree onto the vehicle… if you’re using a car then place it right on the roof of the car!… and get one or two pieces of the bakers twine cut in long enough pieces to go around the vehicle and the tree…

Vintage Jar Snow Globe05

The truck had opened windows so I chose to feed the twine through the windows and around the tip of the tree to secure the treetop…

Once the string it through and around the tree tip I tied a teeny tiiiny bow…

…and snipped the extra string away.

Then to secure the tree trunk I place the twine under and around the sides of the bumper!…

…and again with another tiny bow…

Voila!… the family Christmas tree has been secured to the vehicle for the drive home 😉  If you like you could tie another string to this setup and use it as a Christmas tree ornament… or sit it on a mantle, hearth, or shelf as a piece of decor!… if you can find a larger truck and tree you could sit it on the floor or under the christmas tree!…

Now I have a little trick for the jar if you plan to lay it on its side… these little clear rubber bumpers can be found at hardware shops, or stores that carry felt feet for your furniture…

Vintage Jar Snow Globe13

Place one on the side of the jar to keep it from rolling away… if you want to be extra sure that it won’t roll place a second dot on the other side!…

Vintage Jar Snow Globe14

Rubber bumper on… snow in… if you don’t like this fake fluff snow you could also use epsom salts, or sugar, for the snow!… your vehicle won’t sink in those like they will in this snow fluff…

Vintage Jar Snow Globe11

Time to place the truck and tree into the snow!

Vintage Jar Snow Globe15

Once the truck was placed and snow adjusted all around it I tied on a little piece of bakers twine…

These little globes make great seasonal home decor, and great gifts for teachers, friends, family, coworkers… just tie on a little gift tag, like these incredible tags created by Cynthia Frenette and your gift is ready for giving!… you can get fancy and really personalize these by purchase dinkies that are replicas of each persons vehicle! When you are making yours please take a few photos and come and share them with us the Feathering My Nest Facebook page!  I can’t wait to see what you come up with!… and be sure to come back to Feathering My Nest for more tutorials!
