Here it is! After 5 months of Finley being here I finally buttoned upped and photographed his nursery to share with you all!…
It’s been awhile getting this together… processing the pregnancy… beginning the journey into motherhood… combatting the anxiety of bringing home a little babe after a nicu stay… ALL of that for another post as I’ll be getting Finely’s birth story together in the coming weeks BUT HERE WE ARE NOW!… feeling great and we’ve got a darling little nursery for our darling little boy.
The walls are my fave grey, from Benjamin Moore, called Revere Pewter. With the grey walls and white trims I knew I wanted to bring in pops of colour in the furniture… we went with the Jenny Lind 3-in-1 Convertible Crib by DaVinci… it came with an additional rail so that the crib can grow with our growing little and be converted into a toddler bed! The other colourful piece is the dresser… we chose to go with a dresser over a piece of “baby” furniture, as I found like with wedding products… they have a considerable markup because of what they are and they are just what they are… we wanted a larger piece of furniture that Finely can use as he grows. This yellow dresser, that we’re also using for a change table, is the simple Hemnes from Ikea!
The Whales… I created a family of three hanging above Finely’s crib using Hansa Toy Whales. A little fishing line and cup hooks, painted white (to blend into the ceiling), and we have our own custom mobile.
To cozy up the room, and because I don’t love the carpet, I layered a cream shag rug with natural sheep rugs… nice on the feet and nice on the tummy during a tummy time sesh.
I hunted high and low for rockers… I tried out a pile of rockers… I read many reviews… like other baby marketed products, although the “nursery” rockers looked great, they just were not the most practical things in terms of longevity and comfort… after solid advice from friends with babies and more rocking chair test driving I ended up with a cozy plush blue rocker-recliner from Lay-z-Boy, and that bad boy currently lives in our master bedroom… so to have a place to sit and nurse Finley when we’re hanging in the nursery we added in the diamond tufted chair that I had reupholstered in a canvas drop cloth a couple years back 🙂
The walls… I thought about series of photos… decals… painted mural… but as the room is small I did’t want to clutter up the space with lots of “wall stuff” to start out… as Finely grows the room will evolve with him and his likes… I’m so excited to watch him grow and to see what he loves!
…one thing I knew I wanted for his nursery wall decor though was a letter board… there is fun to be had with this!… but for now I’m stuck on sappy lovey quotes… the quote here is from a Nancy Tillman book… if you have a baby or know someone having a baby do yourself for them a favour and gift any of the Nancy Tillman books… they’re so lovely and wonderful.
Above the dresser we have a looooong Ikea LACK shelf… It holds fun items and it is great to have in place to quickly change up the decor… with a simple swapping out what we place up there… for now it houses a vintage crown light, handmade quilts, piggy (whale) bank, and a few of Finley’s growing footwear collection.
…yes we have a wipes warmer… I see lots of posts of what not to buy or what people regretted purchasing and a wipe warmer is usually high on those lists… I have a list of these items myself now that we’re in the thick of life with baby, that I’ll share soon, but honestly I really like the wipe warmer… and I’m sure Finely appreciates the warmth during the wee early morning changes!.. pun intended
Finely’s first shoes!… grey suede minimoc moccasins from our incredible doula, and now great friend 🙂 There will be more minimoc moccasins added to his footwear collection… they look so stinkin cute on!
Handmade quits from Finely’s Nana and from the artist quilter Cynthia Frenette! That Atom toy is Finley’s fave teething toy!… easy peasy to hold when he was developing his coordination for grasping and the chances of getting something in his mouth to chew was high! haha! now he’s a pro with his atom and grabbing… grabbing everything within hi sweet little reach! As I type he’s sitting with Nana having a grand old chew on his atom.
This vintage crown light housing I purchased over a year before getting pregnant… I didn’t have a plan for it when I purchased it but I knew that it was going to come in handy… eventually… it is perfect for our little prince! I picked it up from a local market from one of my favourite vintage vendors Few And Between…. inside I put a string of battery operated LED lights so that we can use it as a night light.
The lamp on the side table I chose to match the funky ceiling light fixture… The lamp was a Homesense find!… the Ikea side table doubles as extra blanket storage when we’re feeling extra cuddly!… and it is a fun inexpensive piece that will easily work in the space as the space develops with our growing babe.
YUP!… a pizza pillow is from Forage Photo And Design… what little kid isn’t going to want a pizza pillow!? I couldn’t resist this hand painted pillow when I came across it at another local market event… Oh and the felt polaroid camera that sits on the looooong shelf is from Forage Photo and Design too!… her work is the definition of fun and fresh!
We discovered Sophie La Girafe early in pregnancy… and also her adorable pal Fan Fan Le Faun… I had to have him for Finely!… Finely loves gnawing on his ears… nose… legs… butt… all over! Both Sophie and Fan Fan get quite the going over these days as it appears our babe is working hard to cut his first teeth.
We come from a crafty family… Nana is a quilter, knitter, maker of all things… honestly its where I get my maker genes from… there is something very special about having handmade quilts and blankets to grow up with… I had many when I was little and still have them to this day.
This moon quilt is another creation by Cynthia F that I was beyond lucky to get my hands on, just a couple weeks back when she was selling off older work to make room for new! LUCKY US!… it’s like it was made just for Finely’s nursery!…
Bunnies… I hope Finley likes bunnies… haha… I purchased many of them before Finley was born… I just can’t resist the Jellycat stuffies… I just discovered, now as I was looking at their website, that they also make little bunny slippers… I’ll brb… going to order some of those right meow!
I mentioned Nancy Tillman earlier… a friend gifted us “On The Night You Were Born”… I cried when I read it and then I started buying up her other books for Finely… they’re written with such love… the love oozes right off the the pages.
Instead of a traditional bassinet I found a neat basket from a basket vendor at the new Granary Road Market this past summer… Finley had a few summer naps in this basket in the living room with us… the kitties seem to enjoy naps in here the most ha!… but as Finley has more solid naps, and I’m puttering around the main level, the basket comes down and gives him the cutest place to nap nearby mama.
For Finley’s growing book collection we utilized the Ikea picture shelf to create bookshelves… the picture shelf is small… it was the perfect size for the small wall, and very clean looking, matching the white trimming in our home.
The top shelf of Finely’s book shelves are holding old, well loved, books from our family… Sleeping Beauty belonged to my mother (Nana) and the Nursery Rhymes and Seuss Books belonged to my brother and I… Uncle Frankie even wrote a message in his fave, Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now, for Finely 🙂
One of the most fun pieces in the room has to be the sputnik light fixture from Progress Lighting… this sweet fixture casts the softest glow over the room at night… the light is so very gentle… nursery perfect I would say!
And there we have it!… Finely’s Nursery! 🙂 Let me know what you think in the comments below!
